Abstract:
Buying into the Regime explores the relationship between Chile’s lucrative grape industry and Americans’ growing appetite for fresh and healthy eating in the late 20th century.  Almost all grapes eaten in the U.S. during the winter have come from Chile. Debates over “consumerism” became central to pro-democracy struggles against Pinochet as well as to shifting relationships between women and men. As a transnational history, Buying into the Regime connects the lives of Latin American workers to the North Americans who bought their products.  It argues that consumption was a terrain of political struggle and transformation on both sides of the Equator.
