[Non-CKS] What's in a Name? Korean(ized) English(es) and the World Englishes

In the past three decades, modelling and categorizing varieties of English has been a productive endeavor in the field of World Englishes (WE). Originally overshadowed by the rather static ENL-ESL-EFL distinction (see Strang 1970) and Kachru’s (1985) Concentric Circles Model, newer frameworks (e.g., Schneider’s 2003, 2007 Dynamic Model and Buschfeld and Kautzsch’s 2017 Extra- and Intraterritorial Forces (EIF) Model) represent more dynamic approaches to the worldwide variation of English. Regardless of which model is selected, these attempts at categorization inevitably go hand in hand with matters of variety naming and it is by no means a trivial issue which terminology is adapted by the research community.
In this talk, Dr. Rüdiger will, first of all, consider the World Englishes naming conventions related to the South Korean context (i.e., Korean English(es), Koreanized English(es), English(es) in Korea, and Konglish) and how these fit in with the newer WE categorization systems (mainly the EIF model). As a second step, she will align those terminological considerations with results from corpus-based research on the morpho-syntactic and discourse-pragmatic level of English as spoken in South Korea and how this impacts on naming choices. Last but not least, she will show how new corpus-based approaches to East Asian varieties of English at large are a powerful tool to counter existing inequalities in the WE paradigm.
